Tabarca Island to receive improved port facilities and year-round maritime connections
Authorities in the Valencian Community are implementing measures to improve infrastructure and connectivity for Tabarca Island, the only inhabited island in the region.
The Generalitat, along with the municipalities of Alicante and Santa Pola, has entered negotiations with maritime transport companies to guarantee a minimum of three daily boat connections between the mainland and the island throughout the entire year. These scheduled services, intended to facilitate work, health, and supply needs for the island's 59 residents, would include morning, midday, and evening departures. During low-demand months from November to February, a single company may be tasked with ensuring these minimum services.
Simultaneously, efforts are underway to revitalize the island's port. Plans include removing abandoned vessels currently occupying the beach within the port area to improve space and safety. To enhance the passenger experience, authorities intend to restore the port's shading systems and expand waiting areas to better manage high volumes of travelers during peak seasons. Officials are also working on a new distribution plan for the loading dock to resolve organizational conflicts between cargo movement and passenger boarding.
