Tabasco authorities alert for heavy rainfall and flooding
Authorities in Tabasco, Mexico, have issued a preventive alert due to forecasts of heavy rainfall, with accumulations potentially reaching 150 millimeters in the Los Ríos and La Sierra subregions this weekend.
To prepare for potential flooding and cold fronts, the State Civil Protection Institute has identified 535 temporary shelters across 17 municipalities, capable of accommodating over 91,000 people. The Mexican National Water Commission (Conagua) is also implementing the PROHTAB hydrological project, which involves a 455 million peso investment to reinforce vulnerable areas with concrete walls, embankments, and groynes.
Ongoing mitigation efforts include dredging rivers such as the Usumacinta and La Sierra, as well as cleaning drainage systems. The Mexican Army remains on standby with 670 personnel under the DN-III-E Plan to assist in case of emergencies.
