Tabasco implements economic diversification and youth employment strategies

The government of Tabasco is implementing an economic diversification strategy to reduce the state's historical dependence on Pemex and the oil sector. According to Katia Ornelas Gil, Secretary of Tourism and Economic Development, the plan prioritizes tourism, agroindustry, and urban infrastructure to drive investment and job creation.

The state is focusing on the technification of the primary sector, aiming to move producers from selling raw materials to high-value-added processed goods. Following a period of economic contraction after major projects like the Dos Bocas refinery and the Maya Train concluded their initial phases, Tabasco reported a 3.3% annual economic growth in the first quarter, according to INEGI.

In a separate effort to bolster the workforce, Governor Javier May led the distribution of 1,317 supports through the ‘Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro’ program. This federal initiative, supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to provide young people with professional experience and practical skills to facilitate their entry into the labor market.
