Tabasco reports 54% reduction in daily homicides

Authorities in Tabasco, Mexico, report a 54% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides, dropping from 3.5 cases in November 2024 to 1.6 in August 2026. This decline is attributed to the National Security Strategy, which focuses on addressing root causes through social programs and increasing impunity through law enforcement coordination.

Security officials noted significant decreases in other high-impact crimes, including a 75% drop in kidnappings and a 50% reduction in femicides. Operational results include over 6,500 arrests and the seizure of 2,000 firearms, 13 tons of drugs, and thousands of cartridges and magazines between October 2024 and September 2026.

Complementary prevention efforts include the ‘Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace’ program, which has seen the voluntary surrender of 447 firearms across 10 municipalities. Additionally, the State Security Council is considering transforming the state police academy into a university and increasing prison sentences for homicide to further deter violence.
