Tabasco State Launches Second Cataract Surgery Campaign Benefiting Hundreds
The government of Tabasco, led by Governor Javier May Rodríguez, organized the Second Jornada de Cirugía de Cataratas 2026 to combat cataract‑related blindness. The initiative, coordinated by the Instituto de la Beneficencia Pública del Estado de Tabasco with support from the Federal Health Secretariat, provides intraocular lenses donated by the federal administration and aims to perform 2,000 surgeries across the state’s 17 municipalities.
As of mid‑2026, 707 surgeries have been completed, restoring vision for patients in Tabasco and alleviating the financial burden on families. Municipal presidents and local health jurisdictions assist with patient transport, ensuring that 30‑40 individuals per municipality receive treatment. Nationwide, about 760,000 Mexican citizens live with cataract‑related blindness, with roughly 47,600 new cases each year, highlighting the program’s significance for vulnerable populations.
