Tabela FIPE and the risks of buying undervalued used cars

The Tabela FIPE serves as a market average for vehicle prices in Brazil, but it does not dictate the actual selling price of a car. Factors such as mileage, conservation state, maintenance history, tires, paint, and regional demand cause significant price variations between identical models.

Buying vehicles priced significantly below the FIPE reference carries risks. Low prices may indicate necessary repairs, documentation issues, low demand, or a history of accidents and auctions. Experts recommend a cautious inspection to identify structural issues or registration irregularities.

Vehicles marketed as ‘only to drive’ (só para rodar) often present legal hazards. These cars frequently have outstanding debts such as unpaid taxes (IPVA), licensing fees, or fines. In severe cases, they may be linked to theft or misappropriation, making legal ownership transfer impossible. Under the Brazilian Traffic Code, failure to regularize licensing or complete ownership transfers within 30 days can lead to fines and vehicle seizure. Furthermore, purchasing vehicles with criminal origins can expose buyers to investigations for receiving stolen goods.
