Taber, Alberta ice rink reopens after 2025 explosion with Kraft Hockeyville aid

An explosion on Dec. 17, 2025 at the Taber Community Centre in southern Alberta ignited a propane leak in the Zamboni room, destroying walls and the exterior Zamboni door. No one was injured, but the blast severely damaged the town’s only ice facility, including the large, small and curling rinks. Initial repair estimates reached $10.8 million, of which $4.3 million was not covered by insurance.

The town secured a win in the Kraft Hockeyville competition, receiving $250,000–$300,000 to fund repairs and upgrades. Rebuilding work replaced walls, lighting, electrical systems and removed asbestos, while also adding new netting, boards and a score clock. The large ice arena reopened on schedule in early August, marked by a free skate and the unveiling of a new Wall of Fame honoring Gerald Beckie and Joe Orban. The curling rink is slated to reopen in October, and the small‑ice arena’s timeline remains undecided.

Mayor Andrew Prokop and CAO Derrin Thibault highlighted the community’s collective effort, noting that minor‑hockey teams were able to continue playing elsewhere during the closure.
