Tabung Haji: MACC extends remand of former minister in probe

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has extended the remand of a former minister in its investigation into the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report. The extension, granted by a magistrate in Putrajaya, runs until September 8 to assist inquiries regarding the leasing of a hotel linked to Tabung Haji in Saudi Arabia.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which concerns the solicitation or acceptance of gratification. The RCI report, made public in July, identified management weaknesses, suspicious transactions, and the concealment of information within the pilgrim fund between 2014 and 2020.

In response to the RCI findings, Tabung Haji has reported that it has implemented 19 of the 25 recommended reforms, representing 76 percent completion. These measures focus on strengthening governance, integrity, liquidity management, and institutional risk management. However, observers emphasize that the remaining 24 percent of recommendations must be fully resolved and monitored to ensure long-term institutional stability.
