Taburiente Awards honor humanitarian leaders and cultural figures
The XI edition of the Taburiente Awards, organized by the Diario de Avisos Foundation, took place at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. The ceremony began with a minute of silence to honor the victims of the Toledo railway accident.
Eleven personalities and entities were recognized for their contributions to culture, communication, solidarity, public health, and business. Notable recipients included World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. The humanitarian organization Open Arms also received an award for its sea rescue operations.
Other honorees included writer Elsa Punset, activist Noah Higón, singer-songwriter Ismael Serrano, and journalist Carmelo Rivero. The awards also celebrated Canarian culture through musician Domingo ‘El Colorao’ and comedian Aarón G.
During the event, Lucas Fernández, president of the Diario de Avisos Foundation and Grupo Plató del Atlántico, delivered a speech addressing the erosion of democratic values, the climate crisis, and the importance of independent journalism. He specifically highlighted the impact of global conflicts on children, referencing casualties in Gaza and a school bombing in Iran.
