Tacloban school shooting leads to counseling program and hero's burial

On June 22, a mass shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City killed three students, including 15‑year‑old Chris Lorenz Fabian, and wounded about 20 others. Police say a 14‑year‑old suspect used a firearm that belonged to his aunt, a police regional officer, and a 15‑year‑old accomplice; both minors are detained in a DSWD rehabilitation facility.

The Department of Education responded with a three‑day Psychological First Aid intervention for students, teachers and staff. Conducted with the Department of Health and NGOs at St. Roch the Healer Parish, the program offered storytelling, art therapy and counseling to help the school community process trauma and prevent long‑term mental‑health issues.

Fabian’s funeral on June 30 was attended by hundreds. He received military honors and a final Scout salute, and his family publicly appealed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., urging “Please, Mr. President, help us find justice” for the shooter and his relatives.
