Tacna political developments: election registrations and mayoral legal updates
In Tacna, Peru, 63 political organizations have been registered to participate in the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections. Pedro Franco Apaza, president of the Special Electoral Jury of Tacna, stated that the final list of participating organizations will be determined on September 5. Currently, seven organizations are appealing exclusions through the National Jury of Elections in Lima. Common reasons for exclusion included failure to meet minimum two-year residency requirements and youth quota non-compliance.
Separately, the Provincial Mayor of Tacna, Pascual Milton Güisa Bravo, had a court ruling declaring him a contumacious defendant overturned. The declaration followed his failure to attend a virtual hearing on August 13 regarding a case of alleged disobedience or resistance to authority stemming from a 2018 labor lawsuit. The municipality argued his absence was due to an official trip to Lima. The court subsequently accepted the justification and rescinded the previous ruling.
