Taco Day celebrates Mexican culinary heritage

October 4 marks Taco Day, a celebration of the iconic Mexican dish and the broader Tex-Mex culinary tradition. Mexican cuisine has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage element since 2010.

The taco is characterized by its versatile fillings within a tortilla, traditionally made from corn. Corn holds deep historical significance, as pre-Columbian civilizations like the Maya and Aztecs considered it a sacred food. While ingredients such as corn, beans, and chili are indigenous to the region, the introduction of meat and various spices occurred following Spanish influence.
