Tacuru Mayor initiates investigation after audio suggests poisoning indigenous water

Rogério Torquetti, the mayor of Tacuru, has announced the opening of an administrative procedure to investigate and suspend a municipal employee following the circulation of audio recordings. In the recordings, which surfaced after recent elections, individuals identified as municipal employees used derogatory language toward indigenous communities and suggested that poison should be placed in the water supplying the Sossoró village.

The mayor characterized the comments as a “misunderstanding” resulting from euphoria and alcohol consumption following election results. While Torquetti described the employee involved as an “excellent servant,” he confirmed that legal counsel advised the suspension and prohibited the individuals from entering indigenous communities.

Luiz Eloy Terena, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, stated that the ministry has received various reports of political violence and harassment against indigenous villages and emphasized that such intimidation will not be tolerated.
