Taereung CC housing project enters World Heritage Impact Assessment

The South Korean government has initiated the World Heritage Impact Assessment process for the development of the Taereung CC site in Nowon-gu, Seoul. This site is a key component of the government’s plan to supply 6,800 housing units to the metropolitan area.

Because the site is located near the UNESCO World Heritage ‘Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty’ (specifically Taereung and Gangreung), the assessment is required to evaluate the impact on the cultural landscape. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport aims to complete this review within the year. The current timeline targets district designation by March 2025, with construction scheduled to begin in the first half of 2029.

The project faces potential challenges, including local resident opposition regarding traffic congestion and environmental concerns, as well as debates over the scale of housing supply to protect the heritage landscape. Some suggest reducing the supply to approximately 3,000 units to better preserve the area.
