Tai Yat Elevator found missing fireproof door frames in dozens of estates

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has uncovered widespread safety violations by Tai Yat Elevator. An inspection revealed that 48 elevators installed at Tsui Ping North Estate in Kwun Tong and Bok Hong Estate in Sha Tin were missing required fireproof door frame components. Following an expanded investigation, the EMSD discovered that over 30 other housing estates or single buildings contracted by the same company also lacked these essential components.

EMSD Director Poon Kwok-ying stated that the omissions do not appear to be simple oversights, noting that fireproof requirements for elevator door frames have been in place for decades. While the department had previously issued permits for these elevators based on engineer inspections and fireproof test certificates, they acknowledged a need to strengthen regulatory oversight regarding door frame materials.

In response, the Tsui Ping North Estate management and owners' corporation have demanded that Tai Yat Elevator conduct a comprehensive safety inspection and assessment within three days. They have also requested the immediate installation of the missing components. The inspection and re-certification process is expected to continue through the upcoming holidays to ensure safety standards are met.
