Taichung and Oakland County sign sister city agreement

Taichung City and Oakland County, Michigan, have officially signed a sister city agreement to deepen cooperation across trade, technology, education, and culture. The signing ceremony, held on September 18, was attended by Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen and Oakland County Executive David Coulter, with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer witnessing the event.

The agreement aims to leverage the complementary industrial strengths of both regions. Oakland County serves as a major automotive research and manufacturing hub, while Taichung is a critical center for the semiconductor industry, hosting major facilities for companies such as TSMC and Micron. Both regions also share a focus on emerging technologies, including drones, unmanned vehicles, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

Governor Whitmer and County Executive Coulter noted that several Taichung-based enterprises already maintain investments or operations in Michigan. The partnership is expected to facilitate professional and academic exchanges and foster economic growth through enhanced industrial ties.
