Taichung driver under investigation after fatal double-strike incident
A 30-year-old man surnamed Lin is under investigation after a fatal incident in Taichung City involving a Mercedes-Benz. According to surveillance footage, Lin struck a 37-year-old nurse, surnamed Chen, while she was crossing a street in the West District in the early hours of the morning. After the initial impact, which threw the victim approximately 40 meters, Lin did not stop to provide aid.
Instead, Lin drove to a nearby intersection, performed a U-turn, and returned to the scene where he drove over the victim a second time, causing fatal injuries. Lin subsequently surrendered to the police. While initial tests showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment, investigators noted his mental state appeared unstable.
Police are investigating several possible motives, including whether the driver acted to avoid high medical compensation costs or if the behavior was a result of psychological distress. Legal experts have suggested the case should be prosecuted as homicide rather than a simple traffic accident. The case has been referred to the prosecutor's office for potential detention.
