Taichung drug-impaired driver injures three students
A 21-year-old man was arrested in Taichung, Taiwan, after driving under the influence of drugs and striking three university students. The incident occurred around 6:00 AM on October 3 near the intersection of Shuangshi Road and Jinnan Street.
The driver, identified by the surname Huang, lost control of his vehicle, hitting a pedestrian bridge and three 19-year-old students from Taiwan Sport University who were out for a morning run. The victims, consisting of two males and one female, sustained various injuries but are reported to be in non-life-threatening condition.
Following the collision, Huang reportedly exhibited erratic behavior, shouting at bystanders and claiming his family was wealthy. Police drug screenings returned a positive result for etomidate. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Mr. Wu, also tested positive for drugs and is under investigation for allegedly attempting to falsely claim he was the driver to protect Huang.
The Taichung District Prosecutors Office has applied for Huang's detention, citing the severity of the offense and the risk of recidivism. Authorities emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward drug-impaired driving.
