Taichung hosts exhibition on indigenous urban migration

The Taichung City Government Indigenous Peoples Affairs Council, in collaboration with the National Public Information Library, has launched a special exhibition titled ‘Movement and Settlement: Tribal Paths in the City’. The exhibition explores the migration and settlement history of indigenous peoples in urban Taichung.

Based on field research and oral interviews with 35 individuals across different generations, the exhibition covers four main themes: migration motives and original homeland backgrounds, work experience and urban adaptation, community networks and cultural participation, and memory, inheritance, and future imagination. The research identified various drivers for migration, including employment, education, marriage, kinship networks, and significant historical events such as the 921 earthquake.

Visitors can explore the development of several key settlements, including Qingquangang in Daya District, Paiwan Street in Nantun District, Singapore Garden New Town in Dadu District, Huadong New Village in Wufeng District, and Ziqiang New Village in Taiping District. The exhibition aims to demonstrate how indigenous culture is continuously practiced and passed down within new urban environments.
