Taichung teacher severely injured in school attack by special‑education student wielding broken broom

A special‑education student in Taichung, Taiwan, attacked a female biology teacher during a summer tutoring class. After being asked to stay seated, the student broke a broom and stabbed the teacher with the sharp end. The teacher suffered facial bone fractures, a ruptured iris, displaced lens and retinal damage, putting her at risk of permanent blindness, as well as a broken nasolacrimal duct.

The teacher was rushed to Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, where emergency eye surgery was performed. The school suspended the student and arranged counseling for both the teacher and classmates. Police involvement and a formal complaint are pending.

The incident has prompted the school to activate emergency protocols, provide psychological support, and cooperate with education and police authorities to ensure campus safety.
