Taichung to allow large motorcycles in scooter spaces from November

Taichung City will officially allow large motorcycles to park in roadside scooter spaces and slow-vehicle zones starting November 1. This decision follows pilot programs conducted at 13 off-street parking lots since February and specific commercial areas since May.

Under Taichung’s new regulations, the principle is one vehicle per space. Large motorcycles must park according to the indicated direction and must not exceed the parking lines. If a motorcycle is too large for a single space, owners should use slow-vehicle zones or standard car spaces. Parking fees will match existing scooter rates, though monthly passes for cars and scooters are not interchangeable.

Other major cities in Taiwan have implemented similar but distinct rules:

• Taipei: Allows large motorcycles to occupy up to two spaces diagonally in approximately 63,000 paid roadside scooter spots. Fees are 40 TWD per instance or 20 TWD per hour, capped at 100 TWD daily.

• New Taipei: Permits parking in approximately 16,000 paid roadside scooter spots, with some free spots in Banqiao and Xindian. The rate is 30 TWD per 4 hours, and vehicles may occupy two spaces.

• Taoyuan: Allows parking in both paid and free roadside scooter spots, with a limit of two spaces for longer vehicles.

Violations regarding parking time, location, or vehicle type may result in fines between 600 and 1,200 TWD.
