Taichung to hold urban resilience air defense drill on August 10

Taichung City will conduct a 2026 urban resilience (air defense) drill on August 10 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM. The exercise aims to verify government emergency response mechanisms and enhance public civil defense capabilities.

Key features of this year's drill include a simulated mobile network slowdown. During the 30-minute window, users may experience reduced speeds or temporary inability to use video streaming, video calls, photo transfers, mobile payments, and cloud services. However, standard voice calls, SMS, and indoor Wi-Fi are expected to remain functional.

Public transportation, including the Taichung MRT, will continue to operate. However, passengers disembarking during the drill must comply with station personnel and police instructions to conduct evacuation drills within the station. Taichung MRT also advises travelers to use physical credit cards or electronic transit cards instead of digital mobile payments to avoid transaction issues caused by network congestion.

Authorities advise citizens to seek shelter in basements or sturdy buildings and avoid observing or filming the drill in the streets. Failure to comply with air defense drill regulations may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 under the Civil Defense Act.
