Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun film receives mixed reviews

The new film ‘Klara and the Sun’, directed by Taika Waititi and adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, explores themes of artificial intelligence and humanity. Set in a near-future where Artificial Friends (AFs) provide companionship to children, the story follows Klara (Jenna Ortega), an AF who forms a bond with a teenager named Josie (Mia Tharia).

Critics have noted that while the film features compelling ideas regarding technology and human connection, it struggles to adapt the depth of the original source material. Reviewers pointed out that the direction often emphasizes sentimentality over the complex technological and philosophical questions posed by the novel. While Jenna Ortega’s performance was described as lovable, the film’s depiction of human characters and its stance on AI were criticized as being underwritten or unclear.

Rachel House provides comedic relief as the family housekeeper, Melania, serving as one of the few elements reflecting Waititi’s signature style.
