Tailor Abdullah Subakan Preserves Adana's Traditional Shalwar Craft

Abdullah Subakan, a 59‑year‑old tailor from Adana, has spent 44 years hand‑crafting the region’s traditional wide‑leg trousers known as shalwar (also called “tuman”). Starting his apprenticeship at age 14 in the historic Büyük Saat building, he now produces enough garments to ship to all 81 provinces of Turkey. Subakan says modern cuts and migration have reduced local demand, and younger people are reluctant to learn the craft, stressing that “the trade must be preserved by future generations.” He promotes the shalwar as a cultural symbol, inviting visitors to try it on and tour Adana’s landmarks, and highlights its use in districts such as Tufanbeyli, Saimbeyli and Kozan as well as in other regions across the country.

Despite the challenges, Subakan continues to market the hand‑made garments nationwide, aiming to keep the traditional attire alive as both everyday wear and festival dress.
