Tailor Faruk Coşgun preserves Yörük culture through traditional clothing

Faruk Coşgun, a tailor in the Söke district of Aydın, has spent 54 years preserving Yörük culture through traditional clothing. Having started his apprenticeship in 1972, Coşgun continues to handcraft garments that represent the heritage of the region.

He specializes in traditional attire worn by the Aydın efeleri, including items such as trousers, waistcoats (cepken), vests, and square hats. While he also produces modern textile products, his work with regional garments has seen increased demand due to a rise in local Yörük festivals.

Coşgun noted a growing trend of consumers moving away from ready-to-wear fashion in favor of durable, handmade items. However, he expressed concern regarding the difficulty of passing the craft to new generations, noting the challenge of finding apprentices to carry on the tradition.
