Tainan explosion and fire injure 13 people
A large fire and explosion occurred in a residential area in Tainan in the early hours of August 22. The incident originated at a scrap yard located on a vacant lot, causing the flames to spread to eight nearby houses and damaging 20 vehicles, including several emergency response vehicles.
Authorities responded with 53 fire engines and 144 firefighters. During the operation, 36 residents were evacuated from the affected area. The explosion resulted in 13 injuries, including three firefighters; all victims suffered minor injuries such as burns and abrasions and have since been discharged from the hospital.
Preliminary investigations identified aluminum-magnesium alloy and waste oil at the scene as contributing factors. Local air quality monitoring showed no abnormal readings following the incident.
