Tainan migrant worker dormitory fire forces 306 people to evacuate

A fire broke out at a migrant worker dormitory in the Annan District of Tainan on the morning of October 10. The incident occurred at a four-story reinforced concrete building used as housing for employees of a labor agency.

Emergency services responded to the call at approximately 7:23 AM, deploying 32 fire engines and 68 personnel. Thick smoke from the first floor spread rapidly to the upper levels, prompting the emergency evacuation of 306 residents. Eight individuals were forced to use emergency descender devices to escape from higher floors after exit paths became blocked by smoke.

Four people sustained injuries. Three individuals reported minor discomfort and declined medical treatment, while a 30-year-old Filipino male was transported to Chi Mei Hospital in Yongkang for examination due to minor smoke inhalation.

The fire, which burned an area of approximately 13 square meters on the first floor, was brought under control within 20 minutes and fully extinguished by 7:57 AM. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have started in a storage area on the first floor, possibly due to smoking materials igniting accumulated clutter. Official cause determination is pending further investigation.
