Tainan Station unveils new facility as railway undergrounding nears completion

The unveiling ceremony for the new Tainan Station marked a major milestone in the Tainan railway undergrounding project, which is nearing its scheduled opening in October. President Lai Ching-te attended the event, where he expressed gratitude to residents whose homes were demolished for the construction and offered a formal apology to those affected by the displacement.

The undergrounding project spans 8.23 kilometers and aims to resolve long-standing urban issues caused by the railway, such as traffic congestion at level crossings and the physical division of the city. Once completed, the surface area above the tracks will be transformed into a 30-meter-wide green corridor for public recreation, including walking and cycling paths.

The new station design features a sunken plaza, a multi-lingual guidance system (Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean), and advanced ticketing technology. The project will also integrate the historic old Tainan Station, a national monument, with the new facility to preserve the city's cultural heritage while modernizing its transport hub. Future phases include the development of underground stations at Linsen and South Tainan.
