Taipei and New Taipei City offer free transit for World Car Free Day
In observance of World Car Free Day on September 22, the governments of New Taipei City and Taipei City are launching initiatives to encourage the use of public transportation and reduce carbon emissions.
New Taipei City has announced free rides on the Sanxia Line, Danhai Light Rail, and Ankeng Light Rail from September 19 to 22. On September 22, city buses in both New Taipei and Taipei will also be free of charge. Additionally, the city is hosting a ‘New Taipei Coffee Day’ where commuters can redeem coffee vouchers by sharing photos of their transit use on social media.
In Taipei, approximately 719 bus routes involving 5,842 vehicles will offer free rides on September 22, excluding certain sightseeing routes. The city has also designed ten ‘one-day trip’ routes to promote urban exploration via public transit. To engage younger citizens, Taipei is offering incentives for students who participate in low-carbon commuting activities.
