Taipei cultural Van Gogh project sparks debate over local vs. international art

The Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs has launched the ‘Taipei Culture Small Trip: Van Gogh Edition,’ an initiative that places reproductions of Vincent van Gogh’s works at 20 selected cultural sites across the city. The project aims to bring international art out of museums and into the daily lives of citizens and tourists by pairing specific artworks with the historical and architectural contexts of local landmarks.

The initiative has sparked political and cultural debate. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an defended the move, stating that using international intellectual property (IP) is a common global strategy to promote cities and that the goal is to use Van Gogh as a medium to highlight Taipei’s unique charm.

Critics, including Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang, argued that the project lacks a meaningful connection to Taipei’s local history. Other commentators suggested that the city should prioritize local artists, such as Chen Cheng-po, to better tell the story of Taiwan’s cultural evolution. In response, city officials and supporters, such as Councilor Liu Cai-wei, emphasized that the international recognition of Van Gogh serves to draw attention to Taipei’s alleys and historical buildings, acting as a bridge rather than a replacement for local culture.
