Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an faces scrutiny over English proficiency

A debate regarding the English language proficiency of Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has emerged following the resurfacing of videos from a previous speech at Harvard University's Kennedy School. In the footage, Chiang appeared to switch to Chinese when unable to express certain terms, such as “political party inclination,” in English, leading to public scrutiny of his linguistic abilities despite his academic background in the United States.

In response to the criticism, supporters and the Taipei City Government have accused critics of applying a double standard. They argue that if English proficiency is a metric for political leaders, the same scrutiny should be applied to President Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.

Comparisons have also been drawn to Shen Po-yang, a former Democratic Progressive Party candidate for Taipei Mayor. Discussions regarding Shen's English skills have highlighted his rigorous learning methods, including early morning dictation exercises supervised by his mother, an English teacher. Both Chiang and Shen share similar high-level academic credentials from institutions in the United States.
