Taipei Mayor proposes Songshan Airport relocation for AI park

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has proposed relocating Songshan Airport to develop a 300-hectare AI park, including residential areas and parks. The proposal has sparked significant debate regarding national security and healthcare logistics.

Critics and political observers have raised concerns about the airport's strategic importance. Some argue that relocating the airport could compromise national security, suggesting that the proximity of Songshan Airport to the presidential office might influence evacuation plans during a conflict. Mayor Chiang responded by noting that various security solutions exist, citing the use of helicopters by the U.S. President as a precedent for secure transport.

Medical professionals and health officials have also voiced concerns regarding the impact on remote regions. Health Minister Shi Chung-liang stated that Songshan Airport is a critical hub for emergency medical evacuations for Kinmen, Matsu, and eastern Taiwan. Doctors in Taitung have warned that the relocation could destabilize regional healthcare, as many physicians rely on Songshan for commuting between Taipei and eastern Taiwan, and patients frequently use these flights for urgent medical treatment in the capital.
