Taipei mayoral candidates clash at temple banquet

Taipei mayoral candidates Chiang Wan-an and Shen Po-yang both attended a banquet at the Zhongzhuangzai Fude Temple on September 26. The event highlighted growing political tensions and local sentiment.

Lin Chun-yu, the chairman of the temple, publicly expressed support for Shen Po-yang. Lin criticized Chiang Wan-an for his perceived absence from temple activities since becoming mayor, noting that Chiang had been a frequent visitor while serving as a legislator. During the event, Lin presented both candidates with sugarcane, but used a multi-jointed piece for Chiang, jokingly suggesting he should aim for the presidency.

Chiang Wan-an arrived approximately 35 minutes late to the event, citing a prior engagement at a market. He apologized to the temple chairman for his recent absences, explaining that his duties as mayor have kept him extremely busy. He emphasized his ongoing commitment to the Zhongshan District, where he previously served as a legislator.

Separately, a controversy emerged regarding a proposed theatrical performance titled ‘The Prince Swapped for a Cat,’ which was rumored to satirize Chiang Wan-an’s lineage. Shen Po-yang expressed opposition to the production, stating that elections should focus on administrative ability rather than personal history. Organizers eventually decided to suspend or delay the performance following public criticism.
