Taipei mayoral race intensifies amid controversy over media presence
The Taipei mayoral election has become a focal point of political tension between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Incumbent KMT Mayor Chiang Wan-an faces a significant challenge from DPP legislator Puma Shen, a critic of China who has received support from President Lai Ching-te.
Recent polling indicates a highly contested race, with varying results suggesting either a lead for Shen or a very tight margin. This uncertainty impacts Chiang’s political standing and potential future presidential prospects.
The campaign has been further complicated by the actions of television host Kevin Tsai. After appearing at Puma Shen’s campaign headquarters, Tsai faced backlash and boycott calls from mainland Chinese users and officials. Following this pressure, Tsai issued an apology on Weibo, stating he had “never supported Taiwan independence” and expressed a desire for friendly relations across the Taiwan Strait.
Puma Shen criticized the timing of the apology, suggesting it felt as though it had been “decided for him” and describing the perceived interference from the Chinese Communist Party as “heartbreaking.” Shen maintained that Taiwanese citizens should be free to attend political events without external interference.
