Taipei police raid on gay bar sparks protests and discrimination claims
Police in Taipei’s Wanhua District conducted a raid on the BDSM-themed gay bar Commander D on October 3, following allegations of public indecency and violations of the Social Order Maintenance Act. During the operation, authorities detained 51 patrons for questioning and arrested the bar’s owner.
The raid has sparked significant backlash and protests from the LGBTQ+ community, with approximately 1,000 activists gathering to condemn the police conduct. Advocacy groups and witnesses alleged several procedural violations, including the refusal to present a search warrant, the use of excessive force, and the restriction of mobile phone use.
Serious allegations of discrimination have also emerged. Witnesses and recordings suggest officers made derogatory and discriminatory remarks toward patrons, including comments directed at individuals with disabilities. While the Wanhua Precinct initially denied misconduct, Taipei authorities later acknowledged that several officers used inappropriate language. Consequently, four officers received disciplinary reprimands, and the lead investigator and precinct chief also faced disciplinary action. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has issued an apology regarding the incident.
