Taisho Pharmaceutical finds taurine may help remove senescent cells
Taisho Pharmaceutical has announced research findings suggesting that taurine, an amino acid commonly found in seafood and energy drinks, may promote the removal of senescent cells. This process could potentially contribute to extending healthy life expectancy.
Senescent cells are cells that have aged due to lifestyle stressors. While they are naturally cleared by the body, they tend to accumulate with age, secreting substances that cause inflammation and potentially leading to age-related conditions such as arteriosclerosis and diabetes.
In the study, researchers focused on macrophages, which are immune cells involved in the aging process. When taurine was added to artificially aged macrophages, the survival rate of these senescent cells decreased, and the overall proportion of aged macrophages was reduced. While taurine is considered safe in appropriate amounts due to its water-soluble nature, the company noted that caution regarding excessive intake is necessary.
