Taitung and Pingtung announce new environmental and agricultural initiatives

Authorities in eastern and southern Taiwan have announced new environmental and agricultural management measures. In Taitung, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has opened the collection of driftwood along the coast starting September 11. To improve cleaning efficiency and encourage resource recycling, citizens are permitted to use hand saws or chainsaws to cut driftwood for easier transport. Collection is allowed in designated areas until a typhoon or heavy rain warning is issued. While driftwood for personal use or firewood can be taken directly, those intending to process or sell the wood must register at designated inspection stations.

In Pingtung, the county government is launching the ‘Bean Protection Project 2.0’ to combat invasive green iguanas. Running from September 15 to November 17, the initiative expands upon last year's efforts by increasing the scope from four to seven townships, including Pingtung City, Wandan, Xinyuan, Donggang, Chaozhou, Kanding, and Nanzhou. The project will utilize professional contractors to conduct night patrols to capture iguanas and protect various off-season crops from damage.
