Taitung Green Energy Forum targets 60% renewable electricity goal

The Taitung County Government hosted the 2026 Taitung Green Energy Forum on August 26 and 27 at the National Museum of Prehistory. The event drew a record 277 participants, bringing together central and local government officials, researchers, and private sector representatives to discuss the development of renewable energy in the region.

Key discussion topics included geothermal, marine, energy storage, and small-scale hydropower. The Taitung County Government aims to have renewable energy account for 60% of the county's total electricity consumption within the next 5 to 10 years. Geothermal energy is identified as a primary development direction, with the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Geological Survey and Mining Center reporting that seven exploration wells have already been completed in Wulu, Yanping, and Chulai.

Other sessions addressed the potential of marine energy, the role of energy storage in enhancing disaster prevention for remote areas through microgrids, and innovative applications for small-scale hydropower. Officials emphasized that energy development must balance technical progress with environmental protection, indigenous rights, and local community benefits.
