Taiwan advances animal welfare through city initiatives and political platforms

Taiwan is seeing increased focus on animal welfare through both local government initiatives and political platforms. In Taipei, the 2026 Animal Protection Education Month has launched with a series of events including music concerts and adoption drives at Dahu Park. The city aims to promote responsible pet ownership and animal adoption, building on existing infrastructure such as 23 dog parks, 20 pet-friendly bus routes, and free rabies vaccinations.

In Yilan, Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lin Kuo-chang has proposed a three-point pet welfare platform. His plan includes mobile services for chips, vaccines, and sterilization in remote areas, the creation of more pet parks in underutilized urban spaces, and the establishment of a nighttime veterinary support system and subsidies to address the shortage of late-night medical resources for pets.
