Taiwan affirms US backing and warns Europe of fallout from any Chinese attack

Taiwan’s senior representative in the United States, Alexander Tah‑ray Yui, told Politico that recent talks between President Donald Trump and China’s leader Xi Jinping have not altered Washington’s long‑standing policy toward the island. He said the United States will not make Taiwan a bargaining chip for China, even as Trump reviews a Congress‑approved $14 billion weapons package and has hinted at a possible phone call with President Lai Ching‑te.

At the same time, Taiwan’s vice‑foreign minister François Chih‑chung Wu warned European leaders that a Chinese assault on the island would have direct consequences for Europe. He highlighted Taiwan’s critical role in global semiconductor supply—producing around 70 % of all chips and virtually all advanced AI chips through TSMC—and the heavy traffic through the Taiwan Strait, noting that any blockade would disrupt worldwide trade.

Both officials stressed that Taiwan’s democratic self‑governance and its deep economic ties with the United States and Europe remain unchanged despite rising regional tensions.
