Taiwan and Hong Kong implement electricity rate freezes and subsidy programs
In Taiwan, electricity rates are set to remain frozen until the end of the year. The Ministry of Economic Affairs decided to maintain current rates due to uncertainties regarding fuel prices and the status of budget subsidies. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) is seeking support for a 71.1 billion TWD supplementary budget passed by the Executive Yuan to help offset electricity costs for citizens and mitigate the company's significant losses from absorbing generation costs.
In Hong Kong, various electricity subsidy programs are in place to assist residents. Government-led initiatives, including the Electricity Subsidy Scheme and the Electricity Relief Scheme, provide automatic monthly deductions for residential accounts through CLP Power and Hong Kong Electric.
Additionally, private utility providers offer targeted aid. CLP Power’s Community Energy Saving Fund provides subsidies for low-income families, the elderly, and subdivided flat residents. Hong Kong Electric offers a one-time subsidy for subdivided flat tenants through its ‘Care for Electricity Use Fund’ and long-term discounts for the elderly, persons with disabilities, single parents, and the unemployed.
