Taiwan and Palau strengthen ties amid Chinese pressure
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr. highlighted the enduring partnership between their nations during the inauguration of a new wing at Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in Taipei.
President Lai stated that Palau has maintained its diplomatic support for Taiwan despite significant pressure from Beijing. He noted that China has utilized infiltration and “united front” tactics to attempt to influence Palauan presidential elections and sever diplomatic ties. President Whipps confirmed that Beijing had threatened Palau with “consequences,” including the loss of tourism and infrastructure development, if the nation continued to recognize Taiwan.
The relationship is anchored by long-standing medical cooperation. Since 2007, Shin Kong Hospital has provided extensive healthcare support to Palau, including sending over 450 medical workers and providing more than 15,000 medical services. The newly opened K-Building at the hospital features a world-class cardiovascular center, enhanced intensive care capabilities, and expanded ward capacity, which will further support medical referral services for Palauan patients.
