Taiwan and UK sign technology agreement on semiconductors and satellite communications
Taiwan and the United Kingdom have signed the Science, Innovation and Technology Arrangement (SITA) to deepen cooperation in critical technological sectors. The agreement, signed in London, focuses on three primary pillars: satellite communications, the establishment of a Taiwan-UK Silicon Photonics Academic Alliance, and a semiconductor talent cultivation program.
Under the SITA framework, the UK Space Agency and Taiwan’s National Space Center (TASA) will collaborate on joint research for advanced satellite communication technologies. To address next-generation semiconductor needs, the UK has provided seed funding to support the Silicon Photonics Academic Alliance, which will facilitate talent exchange, workshops, and joint research projects. Additionally, the semiconductor program aims to sustain the ecosystem by arranging research visits and internships for UK master's students in Taiwan.
This technological partnership coincides with the 28th annual UK-Taiwan Trade Talks. Discussions between officials focused on strengthening trade and investment ties, particularly in digital trade, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. Bilateral trade reached £8.9 billion in 2025, making Taiwan the UK’s sixth-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UK Export Finance and Taiwan EximBank to enhance cooperation on export credit opportunities.
