Typhoon Prapiroon causes damage and evacuations across Taiwan
Typhoon Prapiroon has triggered widespread disruptions and safety measures across Taiwan. In Hsinchu County, 1,344 people were preemptively evacuated from mountainous areas including Jianshi and Wufeng, where landslides and rockfalls have been reported. The typhoon also caused power outages for over 1,000 households in the region.
In Pingtung, the fishing vessel ‘Jin Liu Jing’ broke its moorings at Baisha Fishing Port in Xiaoliuqiu due to strong swells, leading to the vessel tilting and suspected oil leakage. Coast Guard personnel deployed oil absorbent materials to contain the spill. Additionally, a medical transport vessel carrying staff from Donggang Antai Hospital ran aground near Dafu Fishing Port while attempting to avoid driftwood and heavy swells, though all passengers were rescued safely.
In Taichung, authorities closed the Gaomei Wetlands boardwalk to prevent danger, yet police issued four citations to individuals attempting to watch waves despite the closures. In Yilan, the Ying-shi community was preemptively evacuated due to landslide risks. To assist with transportation challenges caused by a broken crane at Fugang Fishing Port, TransAsia Airways agreed to add extra flights to facilitate passenger evacuation to and from Green Island.
