Taiwan began its annual Han Kuang military exercises on 5 August 2026, running for ten days until 14 August. The drills, the largest ever held, involve more than 20 000 soldiers, including about 5 000 reservists, and feature new U.S.-made M1A2T Abrams tanks. They simulate a Chinese sea blockade, test decentralised command that lets field commanders act independently, and incorporate a U.S.-style “backbrief” where junior officers restate orders to superiors. For the first time, mobile‑internet speeds will be deliberately slowed for two 30‑minute periods to assess civilian communication under bandwidth‑scarcity. The exercises also include wartime relocation of arsenals, mobilisation of civilian factories, naval escort drills and urban‑resilience scenarios. President Lai Ching‑te took part in a night‑time “wan‑jun” drill, travelling in an armoured personnel carrier to a command centre to test emergency government continuity.

The drills cover air‑defence deployments, fighter‑jet dispersals, naval blockades, anti‑landing operations and extensive civil‑defence drills across the island, reflecting heightened security concerns over China’s growing pressure on Taiwan.
