Taiwan launches Han Kuang 42 war games with backbrief and internet slowdown
Taiwan began its 10‑day annual Han Kuang 42 military drill on 5 August 2024, involving more than 5,000 reservists. The exercises introduce a "backbrief" system modelled on U.S. practice, where junior officers restate orders to ensure commanders and subordinates are synchronized.
For the first time, the drill will deliberately slow mobile internet speeds for about 30 minutes to test civilian communication under bandwidth constraints. It also simulates wartime relocation of a major arsenal, mobilises civilian factories, and includes fighter‑jet dispersals and emergency naval deployments.
New elements include the M1A2T main battle tank, the newly formed coastal‑operations command, and a bridge‑blocking exercise at the recently opened Danjiang Bridge. The drill proceeds through phases of deployment, force protection, anti‑landing, deep‑defence and sustained operations, aiming to prepare for possible Chinese attempts to paralyse command centres, ports, logistics and defence‑industry sites.
