Taiwan blocks Coinbase and Kalshi over election betting concerns
A New Taipei court has ordered the blocking of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and prediction market platform Kalshi in Taiwan. The decision follows a request from the Criminal Investigation Bureau to protect election integrity and prevent overseas interference ahead of the November 28, 2026, local elections.
Authorities are investigating suspected violations of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act. Under amended laws, election gambling operators can face up to five years in prison. While Kalshi maintains that its services are not available to customers in Taiwan, reports indicate that approximately 198,000 contracts had already traded on its Taipei mayoral market.
Coinbase has acknowledged reports of website access issues in the region and is currently investigating the disruption.
