Taiwan Coast Guard uses water cannon to expel Chinese fishing vessel

Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA) used a water cannon to expel a Chinese fishing vessel, the Jin Sha, from restricted waters near Dongsha Island on October 1. The incident occurred after the vessel, along with the Yue Hui Dong Yu 75066, entered Taiwan-controlled waters approximately eight nautical miles inside a prohibited zone.

While the Yue Hui Dong Yu complied with radio warnings and departed, the Jin Sha refused three separate orders to leave. In response, the CGA’s Yunlin patrol vessel deployed a water cannon, first aiming into the air as a warning before targeting the vessel’s wheelhouse for approximately 90 seconds. The CGA stated the use of these low-lethality measures followed standard operating procedures to avoid injury to crew members on deck.

Following the intervention, the Jin Sha lost engine power. The Yunlin remained on-site to provide humanitarian assistance, including delivering 35 hot meals to the crew at their request. The vessel was eventually towed out of the restricted area and handed over to the Chinese work vessel Haiyang Shiyou 681 the following morning. Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office responded to the incident, warning that Taiwan must not use dangerous methods against mainland crews and would be responsible for any serious consequences.
