Taiwan Coast Guard faces scrutiny after Chinese nationals enter via Bali
Two Chinese nationals successfully entered Taiwan via a rubber dinghy at the Bali coast, an incident that has drawn criticism regarding the effectiveness of coastal defenses. Witnesses reported finding a damaged rubber dinghy containing Chinese-made goods and supplies near the beach, noting that the vessel appeared to have been abandoned for over a day.
The Coast Guard Administration acknowledged the lapse, stating that an investigation revealed personnel failed to follow standard operating procedures. The agency's director, Chang Chung-lung, apologized for the human error and pledged to hold responsible staff accountable. While the agency has been promoting the use of AI, infrared imaging, and drones to bolster security, this incident highlights challenges in achieving zero detection in waters without fishing vessel interference.
