Taiwan conducts HIMARS missile test in defense drills

Taiwan's armed forces carried out a series of defence exercises aimed at countering a possible mainland Chinese invasion across the Taiwan Strait. The drills featured a live‑fire test of a US‑supplied HIMARS rocket system, launched from domestically produced Thunderbolt‑2000 launchers. The HIMARS missile, with a range of about 300 km, could reach targets on the Chinese Fujian coast opposite the island.

Command company commander Ko Ming‑pin told Reuters that the HIMARS units “demonstrated solid combat capabilities and successfully completed the training.” The exercise was designed to showcase the mobility of the system – the ability to fire and quickly relocate – thereby enhancing survivability on the battlefield against a larger invading force.

The drills underscore Taiwan's strategy of relying on mobile, precision weaponry rather than sheer numbers to deter or delay a potential amphibious assault on its western coast, where beaches and marshes are seen as likely landing zones for Chinese troops.
