Taiwan conducts war drills to test arms production relocation amid Chinese threat

From August 5‑14, Taiwan’s armed forces will carry out the annual Han Kuang war games, simulating a scenario in which China hides invasion preparations behind routine military exercises. The drills will assess the island’s ability to disperse weapons manufacturing, including relocating the Armaments Bureau’s 202nd Arsenal from Taipei and mobilising civilian factories for full‑system assembly, while maintaining output for defence needs.

The exercises also aim to keep sea lanes open, protect shipments of critical supplies and test coast‑guard and navy joint operations, including live‑fire drills and escort missions. The drills come amid a sharp rise in Chinese coast‑guard activity around the island and include a rare public acknowledgement of coordination between the United States and Taiwan’s coast guard on maritime security.

Overall, the manoeuvres are intended to ensure Taiwan can sustain its military logistics and supply chains if key production facilities are targeted in a conflict with China.
